School Board Will Leave 6th-Grade Promotion Celebrations Up to Schools

In a reversal of an earlier decision, the Southern Humboldt Unified School District Board of Trustees has opted to let schools celebrate sixth-grade promotions however they choose.

At a retreat last June, the school board directed district administration to have all sixth-grade promotions occur during the school day, board president Dennis O’Sullivan said at a recent school board meeting.

In the public comment portion of the regular school board meeting in April, six parents and staff members expressed objections to the decision.

Since the issue was not on the agenda for that meeting, the board held a special meeting on April 26 to revisit the decision.

SHUSD Superintendent Catherine Scott reported after the special meeting that two parents attended. She said the board decided to leave it to the individual school sites to decide “what sixth-grade promotion looks like.”

Scott noted the vote was 4-0 in favor of the motion, with trustee Scotty McClure absent.
